EXTINCT SPECIES OF BIRDS
While we were busy taking long strides in the name of development, we failed to notice the extent of damage we were causing to the environment and the inhabitants of the planet. That's what this list of extinct birds seems to tell us. Human activities have led to the extinction of some of these species in an unnatural pace.
1.KANGAROO ISLAND EMU:
The Kangaroo Island Emu is also known as Dwarf Emu. It is an extinct species of emu. The Kangaroo Island Emu became extinct around 1827.
They lived on Kangaroo Island. They lived in the interior forest. The species extinction has been attributed to hunting and habitat clearance through burning.

2. LABRADOR DUCK:
The Labrador Duck was like a sea duck that was never known to be common and it is believed to be the first bird to go extinct in North America after 1500.
The reason for Labrador ducks extinction is still unknown. But there are many guesses as to why they became extinct. It is assumed that due to specialized diet, the ducks became vulnerable when it came to adapting to the environment. The last seen Labrador Duck was last seen in the Long Islands in 1875.

3. PINK HEADED DUCK:
The Pink- headed Duck was a large diving duck that is now feared to be extinct. Once thriving throughout India, swamps of Myanmar and Bangladesh the Pink Headed Duck has not been seen since the 1950's. The reason for its extinction was probably habitat destruction.

4. GREAT AUK:
The Great Auk is the world's most widely known extinct bird.
The great auk looked like a penguin. They lived along the shores of North Atlantic. The Great Auk was a powerful swimmer. Around 1800 the species was under serious threat due to excessive hunting. Excessive hunting was the main reason for their extinction.

5. NEW ZEALAND QUAIL:
The New Zealand Quail has been officially extinct since 1875. The New Zealand Quail was most closely related to Australian stubble quail. The causes of their extinction range from large fires, predation by wild dogs etc.

6. LAUGHING OWL:
The Laughing Owl is classified as Extinct. The Laughing Owl was popularly known for it's crazy maniacal calls that echoed through the forests particularly on dark, rainy nights. The last sighting of the laughing owl was a dead specimen in 1914. But more and more sightings of the Laughing Owl have been reported in the 1940s.

7. DODO:
The dodo weighed about 23 kg. It had a big , a 23 cm blackish bill. The dodo bird lived on the island of Mauritius. The dodo was Secondarily Flightless. Dodo birds became extinct because of the combination of over hunting by humans and non native predators that were introduced by humans to their native island.

8. PASSENGER PIGEON:
The passenger pigeon or wild pigeon is an extinct North American bird. The species lived in enormous migratory flocks until the early 20th century, when hunting and habitat destruction led to its demise. Some reduction in numbers occurred from habitat loss when Europeans settlement led to mass deforestation.

9. CAROLINA PARAKEET:
The Carolina Parakeet was the only parrot species native to the eastern united states. It lived in old forests along rivers. The last wild specimen was killed in Okeechobee county in Florida in 1904. The Carolina Parakeet was posed to various threats, the biggest one being deforestation that destroyed their natural habitats, making them homeless.

10. ARABIAN OSTRICH:
The Arabian Ostrich is an extinct subspecies of the ostrich that lived on the Arabian Peninsula and in the Near East until the mid-20th century. It's range seems to have been continuous in prehistoric times, but with the drying up of the Arabian Peninsula, it disappeared from the inhospitable areas of the Arabian Desert.
